Keep Your Feet Dry: The Waterproof Shoe Guide

As the rainy season kicks off (especially here in Vancouver!), it’s the perfect time to explore waterproof footwear, specifically Gore-Tex shoes.

How does Gore-Tex work?

Almost all waterproof running shoes use Gore-Tex or GXT technology. Gore-Tex is a widely trusted waterproofing technology used by outdoor brands like Arc'teryx, New Balance, Brooks, and Patagonia.

Gore-Tex works by incorporating a membrane with microscopic pores that block water from getting in while allowing sweat vapor to escape, striking a balance between waterproofing and breathability.

While rain boots offer the best waterproofing, you tend to miss out on comfort. Gore-Tex runners provide a much more comfortable, breathable option for rainy workouts, slushy commutes, and dog walks.

Some companies like On opt for their own waterproofing tech instead of Gore-Tex, but the core function is the same.

Fit is a key factor to consider. The Gore-Tex membrane adds structure and doesn’t stretch like mesh, so going up half a size is usually recommended.
