ASICS has fully committed to redefining one of their flagship shoes.

If you had asked me a few years ago about what I thought of some of the core ASICS shoes I would have been honest and said: “You know, I’m not sure they are quite what they once were.”

In my opinion some of their ideas felt a little stale while other brands were starting to steal a bit of that innovative spirit. With that being said, I am excited to officially welcome back ASICS to the exclusive “Makes The Best Running Shoes Club" (although if we are being serious they never really left). The new ASICS Gel-Cumulus 26 (pronounced Q - Mew - Luss) looks and feels different that its predecessor, and this is OK because it’s awesome.

First this shoe now has a distinct rocker profile.

Following behind the changes we have seen to other ASICS shoes like the Nimbus, the new Cumulus now has a much more defined rocker feel particularly in the forefoot. This has stiffened the shoe up and made it more stable. While not as soft as the previous version, this has given it much smoother heel-toe transitions and the ride just feels like it hits the sweet-spot every time.

Whether you are cruising along at an easy pace and taking in the scenery, or looking to crush your workout, the new shape really lend itself to whatever challenge you throw at it.

The midsole/outsole has also been updated and I think this is the key component because the materials used in the foams match the new shape really well. It still has the trademark PUREGEL/FFBlast+ midsole which give it great shock absorption and overall cushioning, but they have added FluidRide to the outsole which lends itself to the rocker profile.

In addition to all of this we have an +1mm increase in stack height and slightly lighter overall weight – so more padding without making the shoe heavier. The upper has also been tweaked and I’ve found it has a snugger feel than version 25.

Key Takeaways

  • Reworked rocker shape provides smoother ride and more stability
  • Slightly more stack height and lighter than previous version
  • FLUIDRIDE outsole made with rubberized EVA foam blend improves traction and comfort

Once again ASICS did an amazing job revamping a bit of that shape and feel with the new Cumulus 26. It can be of a concern when your go-to shoe gets updated, but in this case there is no need to worry. Do not sleep on this shoe!
